Just wanted to write an endorsement for this game.
It's freaking GREAT!!.
Here's why:
  1. Story. Wargames usually don't have a plot, and if they do, it's an excuse plot. Fantasy Wars has a real story, with actual characters (most of which go on missions with your army as hero units). Kind of simple and unoriginal, but it's there. I would also like to note that its campaigns are simultaneous. That is, the events of all campaigns are not mutually-exclusive, they happen in parallel and contribute to the whole story. Wargames usually allow you to pick a side and then lead it to victory on a RISK-style campaign map, beating all the opponents. To complete Fantasy Wars you must play all campaigns, and lead each side to "victory" that does not include total elimination. This kind of story is what you would expect from AAA titles, such as Warcraft III or Command and Conquer 3.
  2. Graphics. Wargames, especially the ones ported from pen-and-paper, often have dreary 2D graphics and no animation whatsoever. Fantasy Wars has modern 3D graphics that is not especially realistic, but is eye-pleasing. Think Heroes of Might and Magic V.
  3. Interface. Wargames, especially the ones ported from pen-and-paper, often have excessive number of poorly-explained stats (I'm looking at you, Sanctus Reach!) and arcane combat rules. Fantasy Wars has multiple relatively simple mechanics (a few stats on units + unit abilities + terrain features + troop formations) that are easy to understand, but they provide a wealth of possibilities when combined. Also, the combat is predictable enough (think Civilization V, where the outcome of an attack is shown), allowing you to focus on tactics instead of struggling against the random number generator.
  4. RPG elements. If units are allowed to gain experience in wargames, it usually just increases their stats. In Fantasy Wars you get perks on level-ups, which helps you to make each unit distinctive. Also, high-level low-tier units can be upgraded to a new tier, thus your early units will remain with you throughout the whole campaign, turning into new, different, more powerful units as they gain experience.
  5. Difficulty. Fantasy Wars is challenging, but what is really notable is its difficulty slider. Or, rather, its absence. You can't choose "Easy", "Normal" or "Hard" difficulty, which in other wargames would just make enemies tougher or more numerous. In Fantasy Wars the challenge level for each mission is fixed (early missions are easier, late missions are harder). Instead of variable difficulty it has variable victory time. If you complete a mission in X turns, you get Gold victory. Failing that, if you complete a mission in Y turns (where Y > X), you get Silver victory. Otherwise you get Bronze victory. Getting gold or silver is not just for bragging rights, it gives you better rewards - which means more money, new units and new items. With these rewards you will be better prepared for the next mission, and getting gold in that next mission also makes you better prepared for the mission after that, etc. Thus the intended, challenging way to play this game is to ride a streak of gold victories until the end. The difficulty comes from the fact that you must avoid losing units, while playing aggressively, and also trying to grab optional objectives, if any. This requires using all of your advantages (items, different unit types, terrain) to their full extent.
